Shahzia Sikander

Shahzia Sikander was born in Lahore , Pakistan. She received her M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. Shahzia Sikander’s latest series is a re-examination of the genre of Indo-Persian miniature paintings and recontext-ualization of Indian and Pakistani imagery . Her work is characterized by the precision of line and delicacy of touch where her water colour pigments often bleed into one another.

  4. I really love this artist - been browsing through her site and love the intriguing background essays she's got re- her ideas and thought processes behind these. I love the combination of very soft, neutral colours and the underlying hardness or uncertainty of the subject matter. lush!

  5. HM , I'm a big fan of her work , I've just been discovering a lot of Pakistani art . Amazing.

I've also been trying to dig up art from North East India because you almost never hear of what goes on there but it's proving to be quite the daunting task.

  6. This is beautiful...sometimes I feel like the modern-day 'kitsch' interpretations of thinsg tend to make us forget just how many styles of art the country really holds. The splashy stuff, to me, is sometimes a bit like being yelled at by a Delhi loudmouth- this, on the other hand, is a calmer- pictures I wouldn't mind having for myself because they're just that amazing and never let me get tired.
And North-Eastern art! Yes, please! I don't know much about artists from there, but that might be an amazing post..

  7. hey bfh ,

I can understand when kitsch gets too much :) As for Shahzia's work , I think it's also the complexity that is intriguing . At first glance , it looks quite abstract and almost pattern like but when you examine it closely you can understand the theme a little bit better . Yes the colours are definitely soothing.
