I'm more of a Beatles girl myself but I find this painterly homage to Elvis 'the king' Presley quite cute. Artist Manisha Gera Baswani revists her fascination for the great icons from her childhood by marrying pop culture with her former training in the technique of mughal miniatures.

when you say marrying pop culture and miniature- then my mind instantly goes to the Sikh sisters :) the ones who put david bekham & posh spice in a miniature. I dig their stuff- its amazing. I also liked Manisha's palette & concepts.
ReplyDeleteBeatles girl eh? Well then you simply can't go wrong.
ReplyDeleteElvis has his moments of musical brilliance though. And some of his movies were fun, in a silly sort of way.
Vin you certainly know your pop art! The Kaur sisters are quite amazing albeit a little creepy haha . I actually covered them in a presentation I did on pop culture in my first year of art school . Their technique is insane! Insanely good i.e. but I feel the paintings themselves come with expiration dates you know? They cease to be relevant after their time much like the tabloids they're inspired by or atleast thats how I felt when I checked out their website recently after ages.
ReplyDeleteY, I LOVE, LOVE LURVE the Beatles.
:) well thats bound to happen when u put people with expiry dates in your paintings :) but the idea rocked I thought- instant fame :)
